Penn State Shenango faculty and administration were recently recognized at the 2014 Hendrick Best Practices for Adult Learners Conference at the University Park campus where classroom and distance learning faculty, administrators, counselors, researchers and others involved in making life more fulfilling for adult students University-wide shared their best practices.

During the conference luncheon, Dr. Kathleen Mastrian, associate professor of nursing and program coordinator for the Shenango campus of Penn State; Lisa Bertin, senior instructor, information sciences and technology; Claudia Brown, instructor in human development and family studies; and  Dr. Jo Anne Carrick, campus director for Penn State Shenango, were recognized for providing exemplary services to adult learners.  Penn State Shenango has approximately fifty-five percent adult students.

In addition to being recognized, Bertin presented a poster session at the conference on Lion Strong, which is Penn State Shenango’s freshmen orientation series. She was also chosen as a panelist for the Hendricks Best Practices Conference breakout session for annual recognitions where each of the presenters had five to ten minutes to describe “best practices” they employed in their roles with adult learners.

Penn State’s Commission for Adult Learners sponsors the annual conference and the Shirley Hendrick Award, named in honor of the late Shirley Hendrick, associate dean for Continuing Education in the Smeal College of Business and the inaugural chair of the Commission for Adult Learners.
