HDFS Club Holds Breast Cancer Awareness Event
Penn State Shenango HDFS Club members and the Nittany Lion took a break during the club's Breast Cancer Awareness event on October 23 to take a picture with Chancellor Fred Leeds (center) and Adrienne and Dean Toth and their baby boy Kellan (front right). Adrienne is a local cancer survivor who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the same time she found out that she was expecting her first child almost a year-and-a-half a go. She and her husband came down to the campus to support the event and answer questions that students, faculty, staff and community members had regarding cancer. Representatives from Sharon Regional Health System and UPMC Horizon were also in attendance to provide information.
Michele Truax, secretary of the HDFS club, who sported a pink wig for the day, was instrumental in organizing the Breast Cancer Awareness event. Michele is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness as both of her grandmothers are breast cancer survivors. She, herself, has been tested positive for the cancer gene. According to Michele, "Cancer can happen to anyone. Risk factors do play a part in it, but it doesn't mean it can't happen to you. I've read so much about Adrienne and Adrienne's Army, her supporters, and she stuck out in my mind when I thought about holding this event."
Other club officers who helped plan the event were President Kelvin Jordan, Vice President Ellie Thompson, and Treasurer Tessa Chanze.
