Shenango Drama Club to Produce A Seussified Christmas Carol
Sharon, Pa.--In just a few days, the Penn State Shenango Drama Club will be the scene of an epic collision when the world of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol meets that of Dr. Seuss in the comedy A Seussified Christmas Carol. This whacky and wonderful production of Peter Bloedel's whimsical telling of the classic tale of Scrooge and his redemption will be produced for the holiday season at 7:30 p.m. on December 7 and 8, and at 2:30 p.m. on December 9 in the school's auditorium, located at the corner of Silver Street and Shenango Avenue in Sharon, Pa. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students and senior citizens, and $4 for children under age 12.
A Seussified Christmas Carol is a perfect fit for the whole family. There is Scrooge, of course, and Tiny Tim, but in the Seussified telling, Scrooge was once a rock-and-roller and likes to be known as "The Scrooge." Tiny Tim becomes "Little Timmy Loo Hoo." The Ghosts of Christmas are back, but they also have a decidedly zany treatment. The characters are fun, and they come and go quickly in this fast-paced telling of the tale as directed by Dr. Jeanne Zingale, Drama Club advisor and theatre instructor. The large cast of student actors is joined by a cadre of puppet actors as well.
According to Zingale, the premise of A Seussified Christmas Carol as a retelling of the traditional story by one of the world's most iconic story tellers allows the cast and designers to think creatively too. "We blend Dickens' world with that of Dr. Seuss and throw in elements that are trendy in today's pop culture, especially in one of our dance numbers," said Zingale.
The play is also a benefit fundraiser for the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County. To encourage the public to support this organization—and to get a discount for themselves—patrons who bring a nonperishable item will receive $1 off the price of any admission.
As an added feature to the festivities, the Drama Club will be holding a basket raffle with many items that would make excellent holiday gifts. A 50/50 raffle will also be conducted at each performance.
So grab your red-and-white striped hats and circle the dates for Penn State Shenango Drama Club's holiday production of A Seussified Christmas Carol.
