Professor McGuigan to Speak on the History of Amish and Mennonites
Penn State Shenango will begin its 2013-2014 Faculty Lecture Series with a speech by Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies William McGuigan. He will speak on “A History of Amish and Mennonites: Apart and Together” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22 in Sharon Hall room 105, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event is free and open to the public.
McGuigan received his doctorate in family studies and sociology from Oregon State University. His expertise is in child maltreatment and family violence. He is an active member of the review board for the International Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect.
His recent work has focused on bias and prejudice towards Old Order Amish. McGuigan has published several book chapters and peer reviewed articles in scientific journals, including an article in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, titled “The effect of contact on attitudes toward Old Order Amish.”
