World Book Night - 2013

Penn State Shenango will participate in World Book Night on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lartz Memorial Library located in downtown Sharon, Pa. This year’s book, Middle School- The Worse Years of My Life by James Patterson, will be free to the public on a first come, first served basis (quantities are limited). For more information, contact the Lartz Memorial Library at 724-983-2876.

World Book Night is an annual celebration dedicated to spreading the love of reading, person to person. Each year on April 23, tens of thousands of people go out into their communities and give half a million free World Book Night paperbacks to light and non-readers. In 2013, World Book Night will be celebrated in the U.S., the UK, and Ireland.

World Book Night is about giving books and encouraging reading in those who don’t regularly do so. But it is also about people, communities, and connections, about reaching out to others and touching lives in the simplest of ways—through the sharing of stories.

World Book Night is a nonprofit organization. It exists because of the support of thousands of book givers, booksellers, librarians, and financial supporters who believe in its mission. Set for April 23 each year to honor Shakespeare’s birthday, World Book Night was successfully launched in the U.K. in 2011 and was first celebrated in the U.S. in 2012.

Why does World Book Night exist? Reading for pleasure improves literacy, actively engaging emerging readers in their desire to read. Reading changes lives, improves employability, social interaction, enfranchisement, and can have a positive effect on mental health and happiness. Book readers of all ages are more likely to participate in positive activities such as volunteering, attending cultural events, and even physical exercise. Or more simply put, books are fun—and they can be life changing.

The CAPS provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on limited budget. The experience is divided into four - 15 minute sessions, each of which represents one week in which you must provide for your family and maintain your home. As one participant commented, “This poverty simulation dramatically demonstrates how much time and energy many families have to give just to survive from day to day.
Drama Club to Produce Mystery-Comedy

The Penn State Shenango Drama Club will present the audience-participation, mystery-comedy You Have the Right to Remain Dead at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7. Written by Pat Cook, this play-within-a- play mystery features an outlandish Southern family in a comic crisis that sets up a murder. But the murder that actually happens isn’t in the script. Who did it is eventually solved with the help of the audience, who is invited to look over the evidence during intermission. You Have the Right to Remain Dead will be produced in the school’s Auditorium, corner of Silver Street and Shenango Avenue in Sharon, PA. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for students and senior citizens, $5 for children under age 4. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The characters are engaging, poking fun at all the stereotypes of family dramas set in the Deep South, at the actors who make up a community theatre company, and at how detectives are portrayed on stage. Just when you think you know who the murderer is, another suspect is implicated, until everybody is under suspicion.

Refreshments at intermission are complimentary, contributing to a dinner-theatre atmosphere. According to Dr. Jeanne Zingale, theatre instructor and advisor to the Drama Club, “We thought about calling this our ‘Just Desserts’ Dinner Theatre production, because there are just desserts, no dinner involved. The ‘just desserts’ concept is part of the fun of the play too, because in a way, the victim gets his ‘just desserts’ for being such an overbearing person.”

The cast of ten actors is directed by Steven Shook, a Penn State Shenango student.

The play is a benefit fundraiser for AWARE of Mercer County. AWARE is committed to providing education, support and advocacy for all people in Mercer County impacted by domestic, emotional, sexual violence, and elder abuse.

In support of AWARE, the Drama Club will be offering a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle in conjunction with the production.

You Have the Right to Remain Dead is being produced by permission of Dramatic Publishing of Woodstock, Illinois. For more information about the show, contact the Office of Student Affairs at 724-983-2836.

Penn State Conference to Focus on the '21st Century Classroom'

Sharon, Pa. — Educators will share approaches to the future of teaching at a conference on "Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century Classroom" on March 15-16 at Penn State Shenango in downtown Sharon, Pa.

Lolita Paff, associate professor of business economics at Penn State Berks, will speak on "21st Century Learning: Content as the means, not the end" in one of two keynote addresses.

Content used to be the end goal of education, but that is rapidly changing, Paff said. "We need to teach students how to access content, how to filter it, and how to critically evaluate it."

Technology can help educators delve into greater depth—not just pack in more content— in their classes, Paff said. "Technology is helpful, but it's a means to an end," she said. "We need to figure out what we are trying to accomplish in the brief moments we have students with us—whether in a physical face-to-face environment or a virtual one. What are the best ways to maximize our effectiveness and efficiency?"

David Passmore and Rose Baker, professors from the College of Education at Penn State's University Park campus, will look at the effects on higher education of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, in a keynote talk titled "The MOOCs are coming to get you!"

Other session topics range from using technology to increase student engagement and mobile apps to increase learning comprehension, to using Harry Potter to introduce students to the research process.

Registrations are being accepted until March 11 for the two-day conference, which includes meals and refreshment breaks. More information and registration forms are available at http://www.outreach.psu.edu/teaching-conference/ online.

Sharon, Pa.— Penn State Football Coach and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Bill O'Brien will be this year's guest speaker at the Penn State Shenango Friends of Penn State 2013 Annual Dinner on Wednesday, February 13.

To call Bill O'Brien's first year as a head coach "great" would be a vast understatement.

Named the Nittany Lions' 15th head football coach on January 6, 2012, O'Brien quickly and effectively established the foundation and shared his passionate vision for the new era of Penn State football during his initial eight months on the job.

After two narrow losses to open the season, the resilient Nittany Lions responded the following Monday with one of their best practices of the season to set the tone for the final 10 games. A 34-7 victory over Navy in Week 3 not only was O'Brien's first career victory but served as a launching pad for the remainder of the season. Penn State won eight of its final 10 contests and earned a 6-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference, finishing second in the Leaders Division.

Penn State capped its remarkable season with a 24-21 overtime victory over eventual Big Ten Champion Wisconsin on an emotional Senior Day, with 31 committed and dedicated seniors introduced before the game. O'Brien's eight wins were the most by a first-year Penn State coach in the 126 years of the program and led to a plethora of accolades for his leadership, coaching acumen and commitment under unprecedented conditions.

In his 20th year of coaching, but his first as a head coach, O'Brien was selected the 2012 Bear Bryant Coach of the Year, ESPN Coach of the Year and the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year. He also was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). O'Brien also was among the finalists for the 2012 Dapper Dan Sportsman of the Year, a prestigious honor presented to a metropolitan Pittsburgh sports figure.

O'Brien also was named the Big Ten's Dave McClain Coach of the Year (media) and Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year (coaches). The Brown University graduate was just the seventh first-year head coach to earn the Big Ten-Dave McClain Coach of the Year in the 41 years it has been awarded.

O'Brien's teaching and tenacity helped Penn State earn two All-America honorees (Jordan Hill and Michael Mauti), two freshmen All-Americans (Deion Barnes and Kyle Carter), six first-team All-Big Ten selections and three individual conference award winners:

LB Michael Mauti - Big Ten Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year;

WR Allen Robinson – Big Ten Richter-Howard Receiver of the Year;

DE Deion Barnes – Thompson-Randle El Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

"Bill O'Brien has been an outstanding addition to Penn State athletics and to our University community," said President Rodney Erickson. "His leadership has been exceptional as he has rallied fans and players in their support of our team and delivered a winning season. Coach O'Brien's commitment to both athletics and academics continues Penn State's long-standing tradition of achievement both on the field and off, and his first year as head coach of the Nittany Lions has been one of tremendous success and positive impact on the entire University."

During the 2012 fall semester, O'Brien saw 47 squad members earn at least a 3.0 grade-point average, with a program record 20 Nittany Lions earning Dean's List recognition by posting a 3.5 GPA or higher during the semester. A program record 28 football student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2012 for owning at least a 3.0 grade point average and being a letterwinner In addition, senior defensive end Pete Massaro and John Urschel earned first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, as Penn State and Notre Dame were the only FBS schools with multiple first-team honorees.

O'Brien's personality, vision, passion, work-ethic, respect for the past, excitement for the future, and no-nonsense approach have resonated with and enthused every constituency he has met, from prospects and their families, to the football lettermen, Penn State alumni and fans and communities across the Commonwealth.

A Brown graduate, also the alma mater of his College Football Hall of Fame predecessor Joe Paterno, the engaging, detail-oriented and intense O'Brien spent 14 years coaching college football at Brown, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Duke before spending five highly-successful years on (Coach Bill Belichick's New England Patriots' staff).

A member of the Patriots' coaching staff from 2007 until coming to Penn State, O'Brien served as the Patriots' wide receivers coach in 2008 and was the quarterbacks coach in 2009-10 prior to his promotion to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in 2011. Born in Dorchester, Mass. O'Brien was raised in Andover, a Boston suburb. He played linebacker and defensive end at Brown from 1990-92, graduating in 1992 with a double concentration in political science and organizational behavior management.

O'Brien and his wife, Colleen, have two sons, Jack (10) and Michael (7).

ATTN MEDIA: A press conference (with Mr. O'Brien) will be held for the media from 4:45 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. in Sharon Hall room 108 (located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, PA). RSVP your attendance please by calling 724-983-2906 or emailing Liz Izenas at egi100@psu.edu.

Campus to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. on January 23

Sharon, Pa.—Penn State Shenango will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration with guest speaker Preacher Moss from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23 in the Great Hall located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, Pa. The event is free and open to the public.

Preacher Moss is clearly the new prototype for the comedian of these times and the times to come. A writer for "The Damon Wayans Show" and "Saturday Night Live," his comedy stylings are distinguished for being sculptured out of the everyday relevance of life and the rare glimpses of truth we value as reality. He is intellectual, yet humble. He is charismatic and dynamic, but does not have to demand great attention or time because his audiences come to cooperatively listen, laugh and in "special" moments, reflect. Truly this is a rare combination. He is more than a comedian, priding himself on being just a man. Viewed, respected and revered as a man of the people, his words carry life and just as importantly, they carry laughter.

Armed with sincerity, intellect and rare comedic ability, Preacher Moss is the "End of Racism" Comedy and Lecture Tour. "Speaking on Truth," Moss has been playing to the hearts and minds of college students and administrators all over the country. With his insight on "racial understanding vs. racial interaction" he has quickly become the funniest social commentator on the college scene today.

Moss has a notable list of television appearances: NYC Urban Comedy Festival, BET Comicview, Comedy Central, Politically Incorrect, Nightline (ABC), and Latino Laugh Festival. He has performed with many artist greats including Maya Angelou, WAR, The Last Poets, Stanley Clarke, George Lopez, Darryl Hammond, Chris Farley, George Wallace, Will Durst, and many more…

She has been a guest speaker on WPIC's Ron Errett talk show discussing various topics including salmonella in peanut butter/pistachios and Obama's Department of Food—what changes need to be made to the FDA and USDA and why.

She is also a member of the Crawford County Hazardous Materials Response Team, which is a nonprofit, all-volunteer team trained to respond for chemical, biological, and radiological incidents.

Baros received her bachelor of science degree in biology from Allegheny College in 1995 and, in 2002, she earned her doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Pittsburgh.
Sharon, Pa.—Create your own small ecosystem with little work or upkeep at Penn State Shenango's one-day terrarium workshop on Saturday, January 26, from 9 to 11:00 a.m. in Great Hall of Sharon Hall on Vine Avenue in downtown Sharon, PA.

You don't have to have a green thumb to build, maintain and enjoy a bit of the outdoors with your new terrarium. The plants will sustain themselves with minimal care and may be placed in any indirectly lit space in your home or office for a calming indoor natural world.

Terrariums come in all shapes and sizes depending on your glassware. There are a multitude of ideas and possibilities for terrarium themes, such as desert terrariums planted with succulents in sandy soil, or forest style terrariums planted with ferns and mosses with branches scattered about.

If you are interested in learning more about the vast possibilities of creating terrariums and making one of your own, the two-hour workshop is $30, which includes all terrarium materials.

All proceeds from this workshop will benefit the Penn State Shenango Earth Fest, to be held on April 13, 2013. To register, go to www.shenango.psu.edu under "Announcements" and click Terrarium Registration Form. Class size is limited to 15 people.

Shenango Drama Club to Produce A Seussified Christmas Carol

Sharon, Pa.--In just a few days, the Penn State Shenango Drama Club will be the scene of an epic collision when the world of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol meets that of Dr. Seuss in the comedy A Seussified Christmas Carol. This whacky and wonderful production of Peter Bloedel's whimsical telling of the classic tale of Scrooge and his redemption will be produced for the holiday season at 7:30 p.m. on December 7 and 8, and at 2:30 p.m. on December 9 in the school's auditorium, located at the corner of Silver Street and Shenango Avenue in Sharon, Pa. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for students and senior citizens, and $4 for children under age 12.

A Seussified Christmas Carol is a perfect fit for the whole family. There is Scrooge, of course, and Tiny Tim, but in the Seussified telling, Scrooge was once a rock-and-roller and likes to be known as "The Scrooge." Tiny Tim becomes "Little Timmy Loo Hoo." The Ghosts of Christmas are back, but they also have a decidedly zany treatment. The characters are fun, and they come and go quickly in this fast-paced telling of the tale as directed by Dr. Jeanne Zingale, Drama Club advisor and theatre instructor. The large cast of student actors is joined by a cadre of puppet actors as well.

According to Zingale, the premise of A Seussified Christmas Carol as a retelling of the traditional story by one of the world's most iconic story tellers allows the cast and designers to think creatively too. "We blend Dickens' world with that of Dr. Seuss and throw in elements that are trendy in today's pop culture, especially in one of our dance numbers," said Zingale.

The play is also a benefit fundraiser for the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County. To encourage the public to support this organization—and to get a discount for themselves—patrons who bring a nonperishable item will receive $1 off the price of any admission.

As an added feature to the festivities, the Drama Club will be holding a basket raffle with many items that would make excellent holiday gifts. A 50/50 raffle will also be conducted at each performance.

So grab your red-and-white striped hats and circle the dates for Penn State Shenango Drama Club's holiday production of A Seussified Christmas Carol.

Lions' Den Elevator Pitch Competition Winners Announced

Sharon, Pa.--On Saturday, October 27, the Penn State Shenango Business Club, in conjunction with the eCenter@LindenPointe, held its inaugural Lions' Den Elevator Pitch Competition (formerly the NW PA College Elevator Pitch Competition).

Teams from Grove City College, Penn State Shenango, Westminster College and Youngstown State University took part in the competition. Both individuals and teams were given an opportunity to present a short summary to define a product, service, or organization and its value proposition.

The name "elevator pitch" reflects the idea that it should be possible to deliver the summary in the time span of an elevator ride. An elevator pitch is often used by an entrepreneur pitching an idea to a venture capitalist or angel investor to receive funding. Venture capitalists often judge the quality of an idea by the quality of its elevator pitch and will ask entrepreneurs for their elevator pitches in order to quickly weed out bad ideas and weak teams.

The Lions' Den Elevator Pitch Competition enabled students to pitch an original business idea as if they were seeking funding. The business idea could be theoretical or a real business idea that they intend to pursue. Competitors had exactly three minutes to give their best elevator pitch to a panel of judges who have investment experience in the real world.

The 2012 Lions' Den Elevator Pitch Competition winning teams were:

Honorable Mention: Andrea Liguore, Youngstown State University

Honorable Mention: Ashley Roberts, Youngstown State University

Third Place: Gene Kirila, Youngstown State University

Second Place: Rebecca Tomson and Alyssa Simmons, Westminster College

First Place: Chadwyck Cobb, Erika Bastian, Liz Wilson and Paul Sanders, Grove City College

Cash awards were presented to the first place--$1,000; second place--$750; and third place--$500, winners.

The event was sponsored by Penn State Shenango, First National Bank, Quaker Steak and Lube, Penn State Shenango Alumni Society, Flynn's Tire and Auto Services and AVI Food Systems.

This year's judges included Kathryn Lima from FARO Enterprises, Maggie Horne from Gannon University, Bob Jazwinski from JFS Wealth Advisors, and Stephanie Gantz from First National Bank of Pennsylvania.

Also held at the Shenango campus on Saturday was an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Fest, which included workshops and presentations on improving one's marketability, as well as a computer recycling event.

Faculty Lecture Series: Nash to Speak on The Cuban Missile Crisis After 50 Years

Sharon, PA- Penn State Shenango will begin its 2012-2013 Faculty Lecture Series with Penn State Associate Professor of History Philip Nash, who will speak on The Cuban Missile Crisis After 50 Years at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 29. The lecture will take place on the campus in Room 105 of Sharon Hall, located on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon, PA.

The Cuban Missile Crisis of October, 1962 remains the most perilous moment of the Cold War by far. Nash will explore the history of this event, paying particular attention to how recently-released historical evidence has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of the Missile Crisis and even exploded a few myths surrounding it. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions after Dr. Nash's presentation.

Nash is the author of The Other Missiles of October: Eisenhower, Kennedy, and the Jupiters, 1957-1963 (1997), as well as numerous articles and book chapters, including a textbook module on Kennedy and Cuba. Nash's current research focuses on the first American woman ambassadors.

Although Nash specializes in recent US and US foreign relations history, he also teaches courses on the Holocaust, African-American History, Vietnam, World War II, and International Studies. In 2010, he taught history as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore. He held a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University and taught in Nevada, Tennessee, and Ohio before coming to Penn State Shenango in 1999.

Nash was honored with the Penn State Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008, and the Penn State Shenango Leonard Riforiato Teaching Award twice, in 2003 and 2007. He is the coordinator of the campus Letters, Arts and Sciences baccalaureate degree program, and, along with Brandi Basos, assistant professor of biology, coordinates the campus Honors Program. Nash is the advisor to the campus History Club, co-advisor to the International Cultures Club, and coordinator for the International Studies Certificate program.

The 2012-2013 Faculty Lecture Series will continue with Steven Brewer, assistant professor of administration of justice at Penn State Shenango, who will speak on Drug and Alcohol-Related Police Corruption on December 3, and Matthew Ciszek, head librarian at Penn State Shenango, who will speak on Campus Pride: Supporting LGBT Students in Higher Education on April 22.

Shenango is Named to Military Friendly Schools List for 2013

Sharon, Pa.--Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named Penn State Shenango to the coveted Military Friendly Schools ® list. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools ® list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

"Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools ® shows Penn State Shenango's commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students," said Sean Collins, Director for G.I. Jobs and Vice President at Victory Media. "As interest in education grows we're thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools," said Sean.

The Military Friendly Schools ® media and website, found at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com, feature the list, interactive tools and search functionality to help military students find the best school to suit their unique needs and preferences. The 1,739 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year's list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. These schools have worldclass programs and policies for student support on campus, academic accreditation, credit policies, flexibility, and other services to those who served.

Penn State Shenango Chancellor Fred Leeds stated, "As a student-centered campus, Penn State Shenango boasts individual service and personal attention to all our students, especially our veterans who have given so much for their country. These adult students come to the Shenango campus because of our reputation as a quality educational institution and our friendly, family-like atmosphere.'"

Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools ® was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The survey results that comprise the 2013 list were independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by G.I. Jobs. Each year schools taking the survey are held to a higher standard than the previous year via improved methodology, criteria and weightings developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from schools across the country. Complete survey methodology is available at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/methodology.

A full story and detailed list of 2013 Military Friendly Schools ® will be highlighted in the annual G.I. Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools ®, distributed in print and digital format to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October.

While the sisters have never forgotten their roots in traditional Irish music, the group has absorbed many influences over the years and is renowned for their trademark spine-tingling four-part harmony which has led them to collaborations with such artists as Sinead O'Conner, Joni Mitchell, The Chieftains, Baaba Maal and the Afro Celt Sound system.

Their energetic live shows combine elements of both pop and traditional Irish music, which has been described as a "collision of gravel and honey," creating a unique show that has audiences captivated and wanting more.

Professor Nash Speaks at Chautauqua on "Truman and the Ethics of the Bomb"

Dr. Phil Nash recently spoke at the Chautauqua Institution during its summer interfaith theme on "The Ethics of Presidential Power." Nash discussed the historical context and ethical judgment surrounding the use of the atomic bomb at the end of World War II in a lecture titled “Truman and the Ethics of the Bomb.” In his lecture, Nash touched on the already brutal conditions of the war to that point, the position of the newly appointed president, the moral conflict with which Truman was ultimately challenged, and how lessons from that challenge can be used to guide governments and leaders today.
